Sermon 15 February 2009

"A Snapshot from the Bible on serving"

Sunday Morning
Richard Hildreth

This week Pastor Hildreth continued his series on servanthood.

The text was from Philippians 2:1-11

Some key points from the sermon

  1. Serving is not an option.  Serving is a reflection of Jesus Christ.
  2. We must agree to love each other in friendship, since friendship is important to servanthood
  3. Christ lived selflessly.  There is a great benefit to dying to self and living a life after Christ.
  4. Jesus Christ came for you, for me, for everyone.  Even his persecutors.
  5. We are called to be brothers and sisters.
  6. Satan wants to cause division and strife in churches.
  7. The Christian way is not a sprint to the finish, but a life-long marathon.  It is not easy.  It is not smooth.  It IS worth it.
  8. Being a friend is sometimes just being with someone.  Sometimes the correct action is to simply stand back and watch God be God.
  9. God will make a way.  As we walk in faith, he proves himself faithful.
  10. Serving must always be measured against the standard of the suffering of Jesus Christ.
  11. It becomes easy to judge, because we forget where we came from.  Don't judge.
  12. We must try to understand that people come from different circumstances and lifestyles, and that these experiences change how they understand God.
  13. Be ready for your act of servanthood to be unnoticed, misunderstood, and rejected.
  14. Our rewards come in the next world.  We do not belong here.
  15. We must reach out to the lost, our brothers and our persecutors alikes.  They are watching us.
