Sermon 25 January 2009

"Am I Sent?"

Sunday Morning

Richard Hildreth

This week Pastor Hildreth spoke on evangelism.

The text was from Luke 3:3-7, with supporting text Luke 4:18 and Acts 1:8

Some key points from the sermon

  1. In the Old Testament there are lots of models and examples of patterns we grow accustomed to.  The Jews had strict laws and very set rituals around their religion.  We can be caught in the ritual trap "I'm a good person, I go to Church, I..." When our only salvation is through Christ.
  2. When change comes the religious get aggrivated
  3. When John the Baptist came, people came out into the wilderness to see him and hear his message of "repent and be baptized".  The parallel was drawn to times when people would come in to the churches to hear the word.
  4. Jesus was sent to the people, and he found them where they were.
  5. When we examine ourselves, do we find that we are only willing to come, and not to be sent?  The test: did you give testimony to someone outside your circle?
  6. The gifts of God are not merit badges showing you to be better than someone else.  They are to make you equipped to spread the Gospel.
  7. It is God's will that all will be saved.  God called us out there.
  8. We must Change our mindset to make everything evangelism.  The purpose of church is to fulfill the great commission.  We each have to witness
  9. We are equipped to witness.  They will know that we are Christians by our love.
  10. We are not to keep a score card.  This is not a competition.  God will make a way.
