Sermon 18 January 2009

"Achan Was Fakin'.  Are You?"

Sunday Morning

Richard Hildreth

This week Pastor Hildreth finished his series on "overcoming the Grasshopper mentality"

The text was from Joshua 6:24.  Other Key passages referenced were Joshua 7:11-22; 1 Samuel 15:211 Kings 15:3; Luke16:13; Acts 2:42

Some key points from the sermon

  1. There is a time to be honest with God.  Achan gave glory and praise to the LORD by being honest.
  2. The Israelites had triumphed mightily over Jericho, but had suffered a defeat against a lesser foe because of one man.
  3. God always requires the best.  In the Old Testament anything to do with the Tabernacle or Temple or sacrifices was holy unto the LORD.  In the New Testament our bodies, we are holy unto the Lord.
  4. We are the priesthood.  We are the temple.  Therefore our hearts need to be devoted to God
  5. Achan decide God had enough, and kept some holy things for himself, but they were God's holy things.  We are bought with a price, and therefore everything we are and everything we have is Gods.  We can not keep what God has given us hidden from Him.
  6. Achan had kept these things, but they were buried in his tent. They were doing no one any good.  When we squander our time, talents and resources on the things of this world they do no one any good.
  7. We must examine ourselves and decide "Am I faking or fulfilling my Christianity?"  "Do I give more time to my hobbies; to TV; to self than I give to GOD?"
